Harvey Oaks Homeowners Association (HOHA) General Membership Meeting

Thursday, July 8, 2021 7:30 p.m. 

Converge Church-14515 Harvey Oaks Avenue-Omaha, NE 

The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Corey Podwinski, Vice-President. 

Officers, Committee members, and Area Representatives present at the meeting were: John Brehmer-Guidelines, Carol Feelhaver-Secretary/Social/Nominating/Welcome, Jim Grabenbauer-Parks, Tom Helm-Parks, Kevin Hughes-Ball Field/Advertising, Randy Mohr-Membership, Denny Schaeppi-Advertising/Social, Marie Salistean-Parks, and Donna Thompson-Area 27.  

Committee Reports:

Treasurer’s Report-Trent Bradshaw wasn’t present to give a report.

  • Corey Podwinski reviewed the financial reports through June 30, 2021.

Membership ReportRandy Mohr gave the following report.  

  • There are currently 426 HOHA household members for 2021.  There were 392 members at this time in 2020.  This is approximately 55% of the total homes in Harvey Oaks.
  • There are 84 residents that have paid 2022 dues at this time.  

Nominating Report-Carol Feelhaver gave the following report.

  • There are currently openings for volunteers in the following areas.
  • Children’s Play Group Chair
  • Area Representative for Area 9.  This area includes 14712 thru 14893 on Harvey Oaks Avenue and 14704-14716 on Francis Circle.
  • Anyone interested in the open positions, is asked to contact Carol Feelhaver at feelhaver@centurylink.net.

Parks ReportJim Grabenbauer and Tom Helm gave the following report.

  • The City of Omaha (City) will be doing some tree stump grinding in the parks.
  • Additional electric wiring to the entrance island at 144 and Harvey Oaks Avenue has been completed. 
  • The tennis court damage (patch) will be repaired soon.  
  • The net on the tennis courts needs to be replaced.  Since the resurfacing, the courts have had an increase in use.  
  • Updating the play equipment in the parks was discussed.  Further research on this project will be done.  This is a major financial project, and City input will be necessary.  
  • There has been graffiti damage in the North Park to picnic tables.  
  • More suitable baseball bases will be purchased for the practice field.  
  • There was vandalism to the Port-a-Potty in the baseball field off of Center Street.
  • The solar lights at the 151 entrance are not working and the cost of getting electricity to this island is extremely high.  
  • Jim and Tom have been asked for a three to five year plan for improvements in the parks for budgeting purposes.  

Newsletter Report-Christina Muska wasn’t present to give a report.

  • The newsletter deadline for the August/September issue is July 15.

Webpage Report-Ashley Doherty wasn’t present to give a report.

  • The website is in the final stages of development.  It should be ‘live’ by the end of July.

Advertising ReportDenny Schaeppi gave the following report.  

  • There were two renewals for newsletter advertising.
  • The possibility of increasing the cost of newsletter advertising, because advertisers will be featured on the website, is under discussion. 

Guidelines Issues-John Brehmer gave the following report.

  • There have been several questions/concerns on fencing between neighbors.
  • The house at 146 and Harvey Oaks Avenue is now a rental property being occupied by extended families.  Neighbors are concerned about parking problems.  

Citizens Patrol ReportJonie Ternes wasn’t present to give a report.  

  • It was suggested a table be put up at the Annual HOHA Family Picnic to help recruit volunteers.

Social Committee Report-The following report was given.

  • The Children’s Patriotic Parade was Saturday, June 26, at 11:00 a.m.  Approximately 90 children plus adults attended.  Audry Childers and her committee were thanked for their efforts.  
  • The annual Fireworks Display was Saturday, June 26, at dusk.  There were four food trucks and Kona Ice at the event.  The event was very successful with more than 1000 people in attendance.
  • The Harvey Oaks Family Picnic will be held on Saturday, August 14, 5:00-8:00 p.min the North Park.  
  • Volunteers will be needed to work one hour shifts at the event.  If you are interested, contact Carol Feelhaver at Feelhaver@centurylink.net.  
  • The food at the picnic will be packaged and distributed in closed containers.  This is for the safety of those attending.  
  • Representatives from law enforcement and the fire department will be at the picnic.
  • The Scouts will have an archery game at the picnic.  
  • Anyone interested in donating items to the Picnic’s Silent Auction can contact Denny Schaeppi, dschaeppi3@gmail.com.

Ball field Committee-Kevin Hughes gave the following report.

  • The ball field has been dragged and it looks in great condition.
  • A family ball game was reserved at the field and this worked out well.
  • Fall scheduling will start soon.  

Fireworks Display Committee-Craig Delany wasn’t present to give a report.

  • The Fireworks Display was a huge success, and Drew Thompson was thanked for his efforts.
  • It was suggested more trash cans be available for the event next year.
  • It was also suggested two port-a-potties be rented for the event next year.
  • With the development of Heartland Preserve and the addition of private homes, the North Park might not work out as the site for the display.  Alternative sites are being consided.  

Old Business:

  • There were two homes that changed hands during June in Harvey Oaks.
  • Audry Childers was thanked for chairing the Children’s Patriotic Parade.
  • Drew Thompson was thanked for the Fireworks Display.
  • Craig Dulany was thanked for his efforts as HOHA’s Fireworks Liaison.

New Business:

  • The 2021-22 HOHA budget will be presented at the August meeting and voted upon at the September meeting.  
  • The election of officers will also be held at the September meeting. 
  • There has been graffiti damage in the North Park.
  • Water bottles have been thrown at moving cars on area streets.  
  • It was suggested that HOHA dues be increased to $50.00 per year.  The current charge is $40.00 per year.  More discussion on this topic will take place at the August meeting.  
  • It was noted HOHA works on a fiscal year basis, October 1 thru September 30.  This is confusing because most everyone assumes HOHA is on a calendar year. 

Announcements:

  • Anyone that would like to report neighborhood problems should call the Mayor’s Hotline, 444-5555. 
  • All the volunteers that worked helping clean-up the North Park after the Fireworks Display were thanked.  
  • Volunteers will be needed to work one hour shifts at the picnic.
  • Reminder-All HOHA social events are free to current HOHA members.  Guests of current HOHA members are charged $7.00 per person.  All non-joining Harvey Oaks residents are charged $14.00 per person to attend.  

As there was no other business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned at 9:00 p.m.  The next regular meeting is Thursday, August 12, 2021, 7:30 p.m. at Converge Church, 14515 Harvey Oaks Avenue.

Meetings for 2021 are as follows on the second Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m. September 9, October 14, and November 11.  There is no December meeting.
