Social Committee Report-The following report was given.
Due to the COVID-19 virus situation, HOHA sponsored events have been cancelled and moved to alternative dates. The HOHA Board apologizes for this current situation and is asking for patience and understanding.
- The Annual HOHA Family Picnic-There is some question if the City will allow large crowds to gather in public places due to the COVID-19 virus. HOHA doesn’t want to cancel the picnic, but it may have to be held at a different date and in a different format.
- The Picnic Planning committee has met and developed some options.
Drive-By Picnic-a great price has been obtained for a box lunch.
Area Block Parties were discussed and determined they simply weren’t workable.
Collaborating with Converge Church with a couple of their activities
- Drive-in Movie Night
- July 4 Pancake feed
- Halloween Trunk or Treat event
- The annual Family Garage Sale-This event will be rescheduled to sometime in the fall.
- The annual Spring Candy Hunt-This event will be rescheduled to sometime in the fall.

- The Children’s Patriotic Parade-This event will be rescheduled to sometime in the fall.
- The annual HOHA Fireworks Display-Drew Thompson has been unable to obtain a permit from the City to use the parks for the display. The City has cancelled all large gathering in City parks during the month of June. HOHA’s request to use the parks for the display has been forwarded to the Parks Director for information and clarification. Drew has agreed to put on a display later in the year, if the City allows large crowds to gather in public places. If the fireworks display would go forward without a permit, there is a possibility of a large fine to Drew and HOHA. Other neighborhoods might have fireworks displays scheduled. These displays are usually on private property and City regulations don’t apply. HOHA is committed to hosting the display. Unfortunately, the situation depends when the City will issue permits for large crowds to gather in City parks.
Ball Field Report-Kevin Hughes gave the following report.
- Renovations to the North Park’s ball diamond have been completed.
- The field will be dragged weekly to keep it in good condition.
- Parking around the field continues to be a problem.
- Derek Menke agreed to purchase a sign telling everyone the ball diamond renovations were completed by HOHA.
Old Business:
- There were five homes that changed hands during May in Harvey Oaks.
New Business:
- Heartwood Preserve, that backs up to portions of Harvey Oaks, is under new development management. Corey Podwinski has set up a dialogue with the new development company. Corey will develop a questionnaire to be sent out to all HOHA members requesting their concerns and questions on the development. These issues will then be presented to the new development company for answers and solutions.
- The east tennis court has been painted with additional lines to allow the court to be used as a pickle ball court. The City has done this without contacting any members of the HOHA Board or the neighbors backing up to the courts.
- The City feels this will offer greater use of the courts and allow more opportunities for recreational events. The City is implementing this procedure on all tennis courts throughout Omaha.
- Although the courts are located in Harvey Oaks, the City has ownership of the courts and has the final say as to what is done.
- Several neighbors brought up the fact the courts were resurfaced with monies collected through a fundraising effort by HOHA. The total cost of the resurfacing project was $11,925.00. HOHA collected $14,202.00
- This fundraising effort was done with full knowledge of the City.
- HOHA has set up a fund to have monies available to resurface the courts when they the surface deteriorates in upcoming years. HOHA also donates $800.00 yearly to this fund for the tennis court resurfacing. The remaining funds from the fundraising project were also put into this fund.
- Corey Podwinski, HOHA’s Vice President, has agreed to talk to Brinker Harding, Harvey Oaks City Council Representative, to see if something can be done.
- Corey also reported that Mr. Harding has talked to the Parks department and asked that the west tennis court not be painted as previously planned with pickle ball stripes.
- Many of the neighbors that back up to the courts are very concerned about the noise this pickle ball feature will present to the parks and their homes. They also feel the courts should remain as tennis courts because funds were raised for this purpose.
- HOHA will do what can be done to correct the problem. But the ownership and direction of the courts is under City management.
Announcements:
- The Neighborhood Clean-Up Day has been rescheduled to the fall.
As there was no other business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned at 9:15 p.m. The next meeting is Thursday, July 9, 2020, 7:30 p.m. method or place to be determined.
Respectively submitted,
Carol Feelhaver-HOHA Secretary
